Complex IT Estates Limiting Business Potential in the AI Era
IBM's recent research highlights a pressing issue for businesses in the AI era. The study found that 74% of executives struggle to manage their IT estate due to its scale and complexity, hindering AI value realization.
The 'enterprise debt' accumulated across process, technology, data, talent, and security domains is a significant constraint on growth and efficiency. This debt limits an organization's ability to capture AI value, with 85% of leaders agreeing that it is the primary obstacle.
However, organizations that successfully reduce enterprise debt can achieve 8% faster revenue growth and 16% lower costs. To address this issue, IBM recommends four key steps: starting with a revenue-generating value stream, treating modernization as an AI investment, using agentic AI to modernize the estate first, and making data accessible across end-to-end processes.
The success of these recommendations can be seen in IBM's own experience modernizing its own estate. By applying agentic AI to their IT environment, they were able to transform it into a capability that agents and humans could actively participate in, driving decision-making and business transformation.
