Connecticut Officials Caught Off Guard by Amazon Drone Delivery Plans
Amazon's plans to launch drone delivery in Connecticut have caught local officials off guard. In May, North Haven's Planning and Zoning Commission approved Amazon's application to operate a drone delivery program from its warehouse on Washington Avenue. However, it wasn't until last month that the community became aware of the project.
State Rep. Dave Yaccarino, R-North Haven, expressed his opposition to the proposal, calling it 'a horrible idea'. He cited concerns about the potential impact on local wildlife and the environment. The drones would operate in municipal airspace, potentially disturbing birds and other animals.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is reviewing the project's suitability with state policies at the Federal Aviation Administration's request. Over 500 comments were received during the public comment period for the application. Many local residents have expressed concerns about the potential negative impacts on their quality of life, including noise pollution and disruption to schools.
North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda has requested a pause on the initiative until public meetings can be held to discuss the project. Other municipalities within the planned delivery radius have also shared comments and questions with DEEP, raising concerns about ambiguity around airspace restrictions connected to Tweed New Haven Airport.
