Tim Cook has stepped down as CEO of Apple, handing over the reins to John Ternus. During his tenure, which began on August 24, 2011, Cook oversaw a significant transformation of the company's market capitalization and stock price.

Cook took over from co-founder Steve Jobs and inherited a company with a market capitalization of less than $US350 billion ($489 billion). Under his leadership, Apple grew into a diverse $US4.6 trillion business that also sells watches, AirPods, and financial services.

The company's stock price soared 2258 percent under Cook's guidance, making it one of the most reliable bets in the market.
