Cook's Pay Package Could Outshine Ternus' Despite CEO Transition
Apple's CEO transition is underway, with John Ternus taking over from Tim Cook. However, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Cook's pay package for 2027 could exceed Ternus'. As Executive Chairman, Cook will earn $2 million in salary, down from his previous $3 million as CEO. Ternus' salary, on the other hand, will be $3 million, matching Cook's previous compensation.
The key difference lies in their stock awards. Ternus' target is $58 million, while Cook's is $47 million. However, 75% of Ternus' stock award is tied to Apple's performance relative to its competitors, whereas only 50% of Cook's award is tied to the same metric.
This means that in a scenario where Apple underperforms, Cook's pay package could end up higher than Ternus', despite having a lower target value. Gurman notes that this is not necessarily a reflection on Ternus' abilities as CEO, but rather a testament to Cook's ongoing influence at the company.
As Executive Chairman, Cook will still have significant sway over Apple's operations, particularly in areas such as product development and customer relationships. His compensation package reflects his continued importance to the company, even if he is no longer CEO.
