Cramer Dumps Bitcoin Over Quantum Computing Fears
Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's 'Mad Money' and former hedge fund manager, has announced plans to sell all his Bitcoin due to concerns over quantum computing.
Cramer's decision comes after a warning from IBM chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna that sufficiently powerful quantum machines could potentially break the cryptographic systems used to protect Bitcoin wallets and authorize transactions within the next three to four years.
Bitcoin has already been affected by reduced trading activity and cautious demand, with daily volume across 44 leading spot exchanges falling to $15 billion last week, a decline of roughly 70% from January's peak.
The quantum threat may remain years or decades away, but uncertainty over the timeline is arriving while Bitcoin is already dealing with weakened liquidity and large wallet transfers.
