CScale Secures $145M for AI Networking Breakthrough
CScale, a Silicon Valley startup that's rebranding from CSpeed, has secured $145 million in venture capital funding. The round was led by Atreides Management, Valor Equity Partners, and Premji Invest, with existing investors Sutter Hill Ventures and Maverick Silicon also participating.
The company aims to replace copper cables used in AI data center servers with optical connections that use laser light instead of electrons. CScale's CEO, Martin Lund, a former Cisco Systems executive, declined to give specifics on the technology but emphasized that it integrates lasers onto chips without disrupting data flow when failures occur.
Lund stated, 'We're not using any exotic technologies. We're using proven technologies, integrating them together in a novel way, but preserving the same trusted fiber technology that has been out there and shipping in the industry for many, many years now.'
With this funding, CScale is joining the growing effort to replace copper cables with optical connections, driven by the need to pack processors tightly inside servers due to limited reach of copper cables.
