Cybersecurity Shift: From Device Protection to Business Operations
The cybersecurity landscape is undergoing a significant shift, according to Microsoft's Digital Defence Report 2026. Gone are the days of solely protecting devices, networks, and apps in isolation. Today's security focus lies in safeguarding how businesses operate across all these interconnected systems.
Microsoft's own scale of operations highlights this challenge, with over 165 trillion daily security signals processed, 31 million identity risk detections analysed each day, and 5.2 billion emails screened for malware and phishing threats. To combat the evolving threat landscape, security leaders must move beyond relying on better tools alone.
A key takeaway from Microsoft's report is that artificial intelligence (AI) is compressing the cyberattack timeline, allowing attackers to automate tasks that previously limited them. This has resulted in faster, larger-scale attacks with the same resources available for defence. As a result, businesses must now identify exposure, prioritise remediation, restrict compromised access, and contain threats before they spread across interconnected systems.
