Cyprus Demands Faster Progress on Aphrodite Gas Field Development
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has urged Chevron to accelerate progress on the Aphrodite gas field, which is considered a strategic priority for the country. During a meeting with senior Chevron executive Javier La Rosa in New York, Christodoulides emphasized the need for faster momentum and an accelerated timetable to reach the final investment decision.
The decision is crucial as it marks the point at which Chevron formally commits the necessary funds to turn the gas field from a project on paper into an operating development. However, Cypriots are still waiting for answers on when the gas will begin flowing, how much revenue Cyprus will receive, and whether any of that will translate into lower energy costs or better public services.
The current plan involves transporting the gas to Egypt, where existing infrastructure can be used to process it and potentially move it into international markets. Christodoulides highlighted the strategic importance of Cyprus-Egypt energy cooperation and the progress made toward using Egyptian facilities.
