Dangote Picks Honeywell for Kenyan Refinery Project
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has chosen US-based Honeywell Technologies to provide engineering services and equipment for his planned $16 billion refinery in Kenya. The facility, located in Lamu County, is expected to produce 700,000 barrels of petroleum products per day.
The partnership between Dangote's company and Honeywell builds on their existing relationship, as the US technology firm is already working with Dangote at his refinery in Nigeria. In fact, Honeywell's President Rajesh Gattupalli stated that their experience with Dangote would be 'useful' in delivering the Kenyan project.
The planned location of the refinery has generated controversy, however, as conservation groups and landowners have raised concerns over potential environmental and social impacts. Despite these challenges, the project is seen as a significant addition to Kenya's energy infrastructure ambitions, with the facility expected to strengthen domestic fuel supply and create capacity for exports.
The Dangote refinery in Nigeria is also undergoing expansion plans that will increase its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day, making it one of the largest refining facilities on the continent. The Kenyan project's completion would mark another major expansion of Dangote's energy interests across Africa.
