Google is working on improving the user experience of Google Maps within Android Auto. The latest beta update, v17.6.663424, includes new features such as a weather animation and support for Quick Settings tiles.

A report from Android Authority reveals that users can enable a new UI for Google Maps in Android Auto by accessing certain settings. Currently, the map area has a light background, while the direction and turn indicator have a teal background.

Google is reportedly testing a darker background for the map area and a dark-gray color for the turn indicator in the top right. This change could improve visibility at night, especially since the current map color isn't dark enough to be comfortable while driving.
