DARPA Tests Microsoft's Quantum Hardware in Maryland Facility
DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is set to test Microsoft's Majorana 2 quantum hardware at its new Maryland facility. This move marks a significant step forward in evaluating topological qubits, which could provide a more efficient approach to tackling quantum computing's stubborn error problem.
The facility gives DARPA hands-on access to Microsoft's latest topological quantum system for independent testing. Previously, researchers could only test the hardware through cloud-based remote access. Topological qubits are designed to reduce the burden of quantum error correction compared with other existing qubit approaches currently in use.
Majorana 2 uses a different approach by replacing aluminum with lead in its material stack, which Microsoft claims improves overall performance and stability. However, some scientists remain skeptical of Microsoft's earlier performance claims, and this independent testing may help address that skepticism.
