Data Centers Join Forces with Utilities to Reduce Peak Demand
The AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) has been formed by Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA to promote flexible data centers that can support the grid and local communities. According to Varun Sivaram, founder of Emerald AI, the data centers could become 'good citizens' of the power grid by flexibly consuming energy during rare hours when the grid is stressed.
The alliance aims to reward data centers that provide relief to the grid with faster access to power. This approach can help reduce peak demand and lower electricity bills for residents. Brattle Group estimates that a 10% gain in utilization can lower rates by about 3.4%. The current process of connecting new data centers to the grid is lengthy, taking up to a decade or more.
The AEMA will press for policies that encourage flexibility in data centers. This includes offering faster and larger grid connections to those that commit to being flexible. Currently, utilities must have excess capacity to serve peak demand, but much of this goes unused at other times. Flexible data centers can unlock 100GW on the existing grid.
