Dean Proposes Framework to Understand AI's Four Types of Answers

The Dean of Libraries at the University of Virginia has proposed a new framework for understanding AI-generated answers, which he calls 'answer typography.'

He argues that AI can provide four types of answers: factual, interpretive, constructive, and strategic. A factual answer is one that can be checked against evidence, while an interpretive answer requires consideration of multiple perspectives.

A constructive answer is made rather than discovered, and a strategic question asks what to do in a given situation. The Dean advises users to consider the purpose, audience, and voice when evaluating AI-generated answers.

In his example, he typed questions into Google search and received AI-generated answers that were not only informative but also context-aware. He notes that AI can present all four types of answers in the same fluent and authoritative form, making it easy to miss the differences between them.
