Defensive Dividend Stocks Rise as Rate Uncertainty Lingers
Investors are seeking defensive dividend stocks as rate uncertainty lifts market volatility. Three U.S. large-cap companies, Consolidated Edison (ED), Southwest Gas Holdings (SWX), and Coca-Cola (KO), stand out for their relatively steady cash flows and yields.
Consolidated Edison, a regulated utility that delivers electricity, gas, and steam to millions of customers in New York City, Westchester, and surrounding regions, offers a 3.3% dividend yield and earnings expected to grow at a mid-single-digit pace. However, its free cash flow and operating cash coverage of debt and dividends are weaker, making balance sheet and funding costs more important if rates stay higher for longer.
Southwest Gas Holdings, a regulated natural gas utility that purchases, transports, and distributes gas to over 2.2 million customers across Arizona, Nevada, and California, has a long operating history, regulated service territories, and focus on essential energy supply, making it a classic defensive utility. Its mix of regulated cash flows, 2.9% dividend yield, and expanding infrastructure pipeline appeal to income-focused investors.
Coca-Cola, a global beverage company with a mix of concentrate sales and bottling partners, generates about $50.1 billion in revenue from non-alcoholic beverages and has a long dividend track record and 2.4% yield. However, its premium P/E and rich cash flows mask potential risks.
