Delta Boosts 737NG Fleet Efficiency with Finlet Upgrades
Delta Air Lines is upgrading its Boeing 737NG fleet with Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) Finlets, aiming to boost efficiency across approximately 240 aircraft. The decision comes after a thorough evaluation involving flight testing, performance analysis, and engineering assessments conducted by Delta and VCT. The initiative is part of Delta's broader strategy to enhance fuel efficiency, cut emissions, and improve operational performance through fleet upgrades.
Finlets are aerodynamic devices attached to the rear fuselage of an aircraft. They enhance airflow, minimize drag, and reduce fuel consumption by optimizing pressure distribution and minimizing airflow separation. VCT's technology underwent rigorous testing, including flight trials and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, before being approved for wider deployment on Delta’s Boeing 737NG fleet.
The Finlet program aligns with Delta’s sustainability goals, focusing on reducing fuel consumption, the primary source of airline carbon emissions. By adopting such technologies, the airline aims to lower its environmental impact while maintaining operational reliability. Delta plans to roll out the installations across its Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft over the next few years, reinforcing its commitment to fleet optimization and performance enhancement.
