Delta Breaks with Tradition, Orders Boeing 787-10 Aircraft
Delta Air Lines has broken its decade-long Airbus-only policy by ordering 30 Boeing 787-10s in January 2026, with options for an additional 30. This marks Delta's first major Boeing widebody acquisition since canceling a 2008 Northwest Airlines 787 deal in 2016.
The move is expected to support medium-capacity international routes, supplementing the airline's existing A330neo and A350 fleets. The aircraft are anticipated to enter service mid-decade, although delivery timing and integration plans remain under development.
This shift reflects evolving capacity needs and route demands that no longer align with strict manufacturer exclusivity. Analysts question whether earlier adoption of Boeing would have provided operational or financial advantages, but Delta's flexibility in fleet planning is now evident.
