Delta Doubles Down on Boeing Dreamliner with 787-10 Order
Delta Air Lines has placed an order for 30 Boeing 787-10s and options for up to 30 more, marking its first direct purchase of the Dreamliner family. The deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031, making this a long-term strategic bet rather than a short-term network move.
The 787-10 is designed as a high-capacity long-haul widebody with improved aerodynamics and more efficient engines. It will seat 336 passengers in a typical two-class layout and have a listed range of 6,330 nautical miles.
Delta plans to use the aircraft on high-demand transatlantic and South American routes, where its larger cabin, stronger cargo capability, and lower fuel burn per seat fit the airline's business model effectively. The plane will offer 25% better overall fuel efficiency per seat than the older widebodies it is expected to replace.
The airline has selected General Electric Aerospace's GEnx engines for the aircraft.
