Delta Faces $13K Hourly Hit for Aging Boeing Fleet

Delta Air Lines is facing significant operating costs for its Boeing 767-400ER fleet. According to industry benchmarks, each hour of operation in 2026 will cost the airline around $13,350.

This figure exceeds that of newer widebody aircraft, such as the Boeing 787-10, which has a lower per-seat-hour cost despite its larger size and higher capacity. Delta's premium-heavy cabin design does offer some cost offsetting benefits, but it is not enough to change the airline's retirement plans for the type.

The 767-400ER operates on transatlantic routes with a capacity of 238 seats across four classes. The aircraft flies daily for 12-14 hours, with industry data from FAA Form 41 filings and AirInsight estimates placing its hourly cost at $13,350 due to fuel, maintenance, crew, and depreciation expenses.
