Delta Places Biggest Dreamliner Bet with 787-10 Orders
Delta Air Lines has confirmed its order for 30 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, with options for up to 30 additional jets. This marks the airline's first firm commitment to the Dreamliner family and represents a significant shift in its widebody fleet.
The 787-10 is the largest member of the Dreamliner family and is designed primarily for high-capacity, medium to long-haul routes. It shares a common platform with the smaller 787-8 and 787-9 but has a stretched fuselage that allows airlines to maximize seats on dense trunk routes.
The first deliveries of the 787-10 are penciled in for 2029, which will give Delta several years to finalize route allocations, pilot training programs, and maintenance support. The airline views the 787-10 as a tool to expand premium-focused growth on high-demand long-haul markets rather than an ultra-long-range specialist.
The aircraft's range and capacity profile make it well-suited for transatlantic and select transpacific routes where demand for business and premium economy seats is robust. The 787-10 will feature Delta's latest generation international cabin, including enclosed business class suites, premium economy seating, and refreshed main cabin interiors.
