Delta's MQD Headstart Program: Instant Silver Status with Platinum and Reserve Cards
Delta Air Lines has introduced a unique perk for holders of its Platinum and Reserve SkyMiles American Express cards. These cardholders receive 2,500 MQDs (Medallion Qualifying Dollars) each year on their personal and business versions, totaling 5,000 MQDs annually.
This benefit is known as the MQD Headstart program and can grant automatic Silver Medallion status without requiring the usual flight spend. The Platinum card costs $350 per year, while the Reserve card costs $650 per year. Combined, these fees amount to $1,000 annually, but they may be offset by bonus miles from card sign-ups.
While Silver status offers perks such as seat selection, free checked bags, and upgrade chances, it lacks premium benefits reserved for higher tiers like Platinum and Diamond. Travelers must weigh the value of these benefits against the annual fees to determine whether this perk is worth it.
