Deposit-Rich US Banks Poised for Interest Rate Hike Impact
The Federal Reserve's decision to hike interest rates has put deposit-rich US banks in the spotlight. These institutions have large deposits that can influence their net interest income as policy rates change.
Wells Fargo, PNC Financial Services Group, and JPMorgan Chase are three such banks that could be significantly affected by rising interest rates. They all have a substantial deposit base that can impact their earnings and revenue growth.
According to the analysis, Wells Fargo's removal of asset caps and resolution of regulatory orders has unlocked its ability to aggressively grow its balance sheet, including deposits, loans, and trading assets. This could lead to higher revenue and earnings growth in the coming quarters and years.
PNC Financial Services Group is also a key player in this theme, with its everyday checking accounts and business balances funding a significant loan book that is sensitive to Fed moves. The bank expects positive operating leverage while aiming for record net interest income (NII) growth of 6% to 7% for 2025.
JPMorgan Chase, the global banking group, has a large US consumer and commercial deposit base that fuels lending, payments, and wealth services. Its higher payments revenue and ongoing card fee/NII growth reflect its effective digital banking expansion and investment in digital platforms.
