Smith worked for Merck for over two decades, initially in the Patent and Legal Department, where he became a certified patent agent, and later in the Human Resource Department. He was also involved with HomeTowne TV, the Corpus Christi Parish Council, and task forces in Summit after his retirement.

The obituary highlights Smith's love for learning, which he instilled in others through various activities, including being a book club member and an avid reader. He was also a supporter of several causes, including NJPAC, the George Street Playhouse, and the Museum of Natural History.
