Dimon Sees Skilled Trades as Key to Avoiding AI-Driven Layoffs
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is making a case for skilled tradespeople as the future of employment. He believes that jobs such as electricians, welders, and other hands-on trades are less susceptible to automation than desk jobs. Dimon points out that the US needs 300,000 skilled tradespeople to rebuild its shipbuilding industry, which has fallen behind rivals like China and South Korea.
Dimon's comments came with a $24 million investment package, part of JPMorgan's broader initiative to finance industries critical to US economic and national security. This includes shipbuilding, which Dimon sees as a key sector for growth. The investment is aimed at helping build a new submarine manufacturing facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
JPMorgan itself has cut jobs due to AI adoption, with some departments seeing up to 40% of staff reduced. However, Dimon believes that skilled tradespeople will be less affected by automation. He points out that while software can automate spreadsheets, it's harder for machines to perform hands-on tasks like welding.
