Dimon Sounds Alarm on Hidden Market Leverage
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has issued a warning to stock investors about the current market environment. He noted that margin debt is at its highest level ever, reaching $1.5 trillion in June and increasing 49% year over year.
However, Dimon emphasized that this figure only accounts for reported margin balances and does not include other forms of leverage such as prime brokerage debt, hedge funds, Treasury arbitrage, and leveraged ETFs. He stated, 'There's a lot of margin debt you don't see.'
Dimon cautioned that when leverage increases, there is a higher chance of market disruptions leading to significant downturns. A rapid increase in margin debt has historically been tied to market downturns within the next 12 months.
