Disney and TikTok Team Up on Creator-Led Fandom with New Content-Sharing Deal
The Walt Disney Company has formed a content-sharing partnership with TikTok that will allow creators to use licensed Disney IP in their videos, which can then be shared on both platforms. The deal includes a jointly run creator ambassador program that rewards top-performing creators with boosted visibility, exclusive events, and career development opportunities.
The partnership aims to create a retention and discovery loop, where TikTok behavior becomes a habit that can also live inside Disney+. This is achieved through the use of Verts, a vertical video feature on the Disney+ mobile app. By making licensed IP assets available, creators can produce fan content that appears on both TikTok and Disney+, turning creator distribution into an owned-channel programming layer.
The deal reflects a shift in strategy for Disney, which is no longer just treating creator content as an acquisition tool but rather as retention programming. The partnership's tiered program is a marketplace rulebook that shapes what creators produce by shaping what they can earn, both financially and socially. This acknowledges the value of long-term partners with their own audience trust and creative signatures.
The deal follows the collapse of a $1 billion licensing deal centered on building a user-generated content pipeline using OpenAI's Sora, which was shut down in March. The takeaway is that brands want a repeatable pipeline for short-form video, and they will choose the pipeline that has stable distribution, stable creator incentives, and stable audience demand.
