Disney Axes More Than 200 Jobs in Latest Cost-Cutting Push
Disney's cost-cutting efforts continue to gain momentum as CEO Josh D'Amaro accelerates his push to streamline operations and free up capital for growth. In a move that underscores this effort, the entertainment giant has eliminated around 200 additional jobs, primarily in technology and human resources.
The latest layoffs follow a voluntary early retirement program targeting employees aged 50 and older who held director-level positions or above and had served at least 10 years. This reduction brings the total number of job cuts this year to over 1,000, with more potentially on the horizon as D'Amaro works towards creating 'a much smaller organization.'
Disney's broader efficiency drive was already underway when CFO Hugh Johnston told shareholders in August that they were evaluating labor and selling, general and administrative expenses to fund growth investments. With investors closely watching for evidence of sustainable margin improvements, the question remains whether these workforce reductions will ultimately deliver stronger operating profitability.
