Disney Cancels Live-Action Power Rangers Series Over Budget Worries

Disney+ has cancelled its live-action Power Rangers series, citing budget-related concerns. The project was set up for development about a year and a half ago with sibling 20th Television as the studio.

The decision not to proceed with the series comes down to economics, rather than creative differences. Disney+ does not own the Power Rangers brand, which is owned by Hasbro. This means that mounting a high-end live-action superhero series like Power Rangers is a major investment with less favorable economics.

Disney+ has been expanding its slate to include outside IP, including deals for Ella Enchanted and Casper series. However, this doesn't seem to have helped the case for the Power Rangers series. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the executive producers/showrunners behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, are busy finishing Season 3 of that show.
