Disney CEO Hails Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day Success Ahead of Avengers Doomsday
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro praised Sony Pictures Entertainment for its record-breaking opening weekend of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, saying it 'bodes well' for Disney's upcoming Avengers installment.
The film, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony, topped the domestic box office with a $360 million debut in the US, surpassing even the impressive numbers achieved by Avengers: Endgame. Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already surpassed $1 billion just days into its release.
D'Amaro acknowledged the complicated legal arrangement between Disney and Sony, which allows Sony to retain distribution rights despite Marvel Studios producing the film franchise. He name-checked Sony, Marvel chief Kevin Feige, and Marvel Studios in his congratulations.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is 'one more example that audiences will turn out in force for great theatrical experiences,' D'Amaro said. With 65 years of history behind it, the character remains incredibly popular across various platforms, including consumer products, parks, and streaming.
D'Amaro's comments come at a time when the superhero genre has seen a decline in recent years, with both Marvel and Disney feeling the impact of this downturn in the theatrical business. The release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18 will be closely watched as it marks the first film in the franchise since 2019.
