The Walt Disney Company is reportedly exploring a free version of its streaming service, Disney+. The move comes after years of financial losses, slowing subscriber growth, rising prices, and criticism from fans who feel the service has changed since its 2019 launch.

Disney's executives have discussed introducing free content on Disney+ to attract more viewers before encouraging them to upgrade to paid subscriptions. This strategy aims to remove the barrier created by the subscription paywall and increase the amount of time consumers spend inside the app.

Other studios, such as Paramount, are also considering a similar model, while Netflix has acknowledged that free offerings could make sense in certain markets. Hollywood studios see YouTube as one of their biggest competitors, especially with the rise of free, ad-supported content.

The possibility of a free tier comes after several difficult years for Disney's streaming business. The company invested billions into original programming across Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and other franchises, producing an aggressive slate of high-budget series.
