Disney Cranks Up Sequel Factory Amid Box Office Struggles
Disney's sequel factory is cranking out more franchise films than ever before. In recent years, the studio has accelerated its strategy of churning out sequels, spinoffs, and live-action remakes to squeeze every last drop from its established franchises.
The latest proof came at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where the studio confirmed a dozen franchise projects already in the works. These include 'Frozen 3,' 'Zootopia 3,' and 'Incredibles 3' among others, per Deadline.
This move comes after a limp box office performance from the live-action reimagining of 'Moana' last month, which earned just $43 million domestically and has now grossed $293 million worldwide. Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro acknowledged the underperformance but doubled down on the value these films bring to the company.
'Even when our franchise films don’t meet our box office expectations, as with ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ and the live-action ‘Moana,’ our investments in these core properties fuel other parts of our company,' D'Amaro said.
