Disney Ditches A+E Stake as Media Conglomerates Reassess Cable Holdings
The Walt Disney Company has sold its 50% stake in A+E Global Media to The Hearst Corporation for $1.2 billion in cash, marking a significant move in the entertainment conglomerate's restructuring under new Chief Executive Josh D'Amaro.
The deal was announced on August 4 and is expected to close in September, with A+E operating as a Hearst subsidiary led by President and Chairman Paul Buccieri.
This sale comes amid a trend of major entertainment and media companies divesting their cable TV assets or exploring similar moves. However, Disney's Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston has stated that the company is not liquidating its other cable businesses, characterizing them as 'brands with studios' that are leveraged across distribution platforms.
Disney is instead focusing on expanding its offerings and intellectual property utilization through technology, including a new multi-year collaboration to stream Formula E races on Disney+ and ESPN+. This approach aims to mitigate the volatility of the film industry, which Johnston described as a 'portfolio game' where a diversified business can help cover losses.
