Disney Heir Exposes Alarming Wealth Gap Between Executives and Workers
Abigail Disney's documentary 'The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales' was screened at the Majestic Theatre on September 30th. The film explores how the wealth gap between executives and workers has grown significantly since the early days of the Walt Disney Company.
Disney, granddaughter of Roy O. Disney, co-founder of the company with his brother Walt, highlighted the stark contrast in compensation between CEOs and employees. She noted that a Disneyland employee would have to work for over 2,000 years to earn what Bob Iger made in a single year.
Ralph, a Disneyland employee who reached out to Abigail on Facebook Messenger in 2018, shared his struggles with low wages and increased workload. He had to quit his job due to health issues related to the physically demanding work. Disney emphasized that her family's company was built on different principles, where executives had ethics and prioritized their employees' well-being.
The documentary also delves into the history of the labor movement in America and how it paved the way for the current 27 union affiliates at Disneyland fighting for better wages. Abigail Disney commented that her father went to battle over the direction of the company, and she is proudly following his footsteps through her work on the film and direct corporate policy pressure.
