Disney Joins FAST Party with Multiple Channels on the Horizon
Walt Disney's foray into the free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) market may seem late to some, but it could be a savvy move. The company is reportedly considering launching multiple FAST channels, leveraging its existing content and brand strength to compete with established players like Fox's Tubi and Paramount's Pluto TV.
The key advantage for Disney is the high demand from advertisers for its premium content, particularly from streamers Disney+ and Hulu. ESPN's sports programming also offers a unique value proposition, including NBA games and 'Monday Night Football'. This inventory is often in high demand, with ad sales nearing or reaching sell-out levels.
Disney's entry into the FAST market could help combat subscriber churn by offering free ad-supported options within its ecosystem. Research suggests that viewers may be more likely to remain subscribed to Disney+ if they can access free content from FAST channels, effectively providing a 'time-out' for customers who might otherwise opt out of their monthly streaming deals.
The use of FAST channels also allows Disney to monetize its vast library of TV and movie content, including classic animation, National Geographic, and 20th Century Fox titles. These platforms can serve as promotional tools for ABC, ESPN, Disney+, and other platforms, while providing a default option for viewers who might be overwhelmed by the choices available on streaming services.
