Disney licenses popular titles to Netflix in new streaming deal
Disney and Netflix, two of the biggest rivals in the streaming industry, have struck a deal that will see Disney license several high-profile titles to Netflix. According to Variety, the agreement includes popular films like all five Ice Age movies, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Pixar titles such as Elio and Soul. Additionally, classic Disney series like Felicity, Arrested Development, and Scandal will also be part of the deal.
Netflix, with its massive subscriber base of 325 million households, offers Disney a unique opportunity to reach a broader audience. By making its content available on Netflix, Disney hopes to attract new viewers who might eventually subscribe to Disney+. The strategy benefits both companies, as Netflix gains more content for its library, while Disney earns revenue from licensing its titles.
The availability of these titles will vary by region, with North America likely missing some of the bigger titles, which will remain exclusive to Disney+. Notably, no Marvel Studios or Star Wars titles are included in this batch, but future deals could change that. The rollout of Disney titles on Netflix is expected to begin in the coming months.
