Disney Parks Soar as Toy Story 5 and Streaming Business Deliver Strong Quarterly Earnings
Disney's quarterly earnings saw a significant boost from its theme parks division and the blockbuster film 'Toy Story 5', which raked in over US$1 billion at the box office globally. The company reported a 20% increase in operating income to US$3.02 billion for its Experiences division, which includes six global theme parks, a cruise line, merchandise, and video game licensing. This growth was driven by a 27% rise in operating income at domestic parks, while international parks saw a decline of 13%. CEO Josh D'Amaro attributed this success to the 'consistent investments' made over time, combined with the unique experience Disney provides its fans.
The company's theme parks also benefited from increased attendance, particularly from US residents and overseas visitors. This growth was fueled by summer promotions and new experiences offered at the parks. In addition, Disney earned a significant boost from its entertainment streaming business, which saw an 11% revenue increase to US$5.53 billion due to subscriber additions, price increases, and higher advertising revenue.
The company's results were also bolstered by a deal with TikTok, where it will feature fan-created content on the Disney+ app. Disney shares climbed nearly 3% in early morning trading following the announcement of these quarterly earnings.
