Merck Doubles Down on China Innovation Ecosystem Amid Global Headwinds
German pharmaceutical giant Merck is doubling down on its investments in China's innovation ecosystem, aiming to tap into the country's rapid clinical innovation and high-tech manufacturing surge.
The company's President for China, Rogier Janssens, emphasized that China not only absorbs but accelerates innovation, with ideas generated within the Chinese competitive landscape rapidly maturing into world-class, globally exportable solutions.
Merck is leveraging the 'China Speed' phenomenon, which refers to the extreme efficiency of the Chinese pharmaceutical value chain. According to data, the process from initial target identification to clinical trials moves approximately 1.5 times faster in China than the global benchmark.
The company has invested nearly 7 billion yuan (KES 130 billion) in China over the past decade and is preparing specialized drives into dermatology, oncology, and AI-driven molecular discovery.
Merck's strategic pivot sends a powerful signal to emerging markets globally, particularly across Africa, where countries are aggressively pushing to establish localized vaccine manufacturing capabilities and health-tech hubs.
