Disney Patent Reveals New Accessibility Feature for Disabled Guests
Disney has been at the center of controversy surrounding accessibility issues in its theme parks. The company's overhaul of its Disability Access Service (DAS) has left some disabled guests questioning whether a Disney vacation is still feasible for their families.
A newly published patent reveals technology designed to help solve one of the most basic problems disabled guests encounter at theme parks: getting onto ride vehicles without transferring from their mobility devices. The concept, titled 'Rider Inclusive Transport Aide,' involves building movable platforms into ride vehicles that can accommodate wheelchairs or scooters while keeping them relatively level as the vehicle moves.
The patent appears particularly suited for boat-style attractions and could potentially make it easier for guests to ride without needing a difficult transfer. This technology could give Imagineers another option when designing accessible ride systems, making it possible for some guests to maintain their independence and enjoy Disney attractions with greater ease.
