Disney has taken a bold step into the future of theme park entertainment with two new patents for AI-powered animatronics. The first patent describes a system where animatronics can engage guests in meaningful conversations by matching shared memories with their own stored recollections. If no match is found, the robot creates a new memory to add to its database.
The second patent allows these AI characters to compose and perform songs, poems, or dances based on the memories guests share. This technology builds on Disney’s recent investments in advanced animatronics, including a free-roaming Olaf robot and enhancements to rides like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
Fans have reacted strongly to the news, with some expressing discomfort. “This is inevitable, & I hate it!” wrote one commenter, while another stated, “AI sucks and I’m tired of it in everything.” Concerns were raised about the potential replacement of human character actors, with one user warning, “Why do I see somewhere down the road Disney ends up firing majority of the cast members who work at the parks in support of having AI garbage to work the rides.”
Others were more open to the idea, provided jobs are not at risk. “As long as AI isn’t taking anyone’s jobs I don’t see it as harmful,” said one supporter. Disney’s recent patent for automatically detecting and removing background crowds from photos further highlights its push toward automated technology.
