Disney Scraps Plans to Demolish Iconic Matterhorn Bobsleds
Rumors have been circulating that Disney might consider demolishing and rebuilding the iconic Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland, relocating it to a new location as part of the resort's Tomorrowland reimagining. However, according to former Walt Disney Imagineering Executive Creative Director Jim Shull, this proposal is unlikely to happen due to its massive cost.
Shull estimated that rebuilding the Matterhorn and surrounding development could amount to more than $800 million, a figure that exceeds the cost of building an entire new themed land. For context, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland was built for approximately $1 billion. From a corporate financial standpoint, such a large investment would be better spent on expanding capacity with new intellectual property or building entirely new lands.
The physical logistics of removing and relocating the Matterhorn also present significant challenges, including integrating infrastructure, land constraints, and maintaining park sightlines and history. Disney has historically invested in refurbishment and structural work on legacy attractions rather than replacing them entirely. With no official announcement confirming the demolition or relocation of the Matterhorn, it appears that Tomorrowland's reimagining will focus on restoring its sense of optimism and introducing new experiences without touching this beloved landmark.
Shull's assessment highlights the importance of balancing nostalgia with innovation in theme park design. While some fans may be excited about the prospect of a revamped Tomorrowland, the financial and logistical realities suggest that preserving the Matterhorn is the best course of action for Disney.
