Disney Seizes Lead as Universal Falters on Pokémon Theme Park Plans
Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company announced a new global project in January to bring more immersive Pokémon experiences to theme parks. However, seven months later, there is still no confirmed U.S. destination, opening date, or clear explanation of what those experiences will involve.
Rumors have intensified that Pokémon could take over the land between Seuss Landing and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure in Orlando. While Universal has promised Pokémon experiences beyond Japan, it has never confirmed Pokémon for Islands of Adventure.
Meanwhile, Disney has made a move into the Pokémon picture with a global distribution agreement with The Pokémon Company International. The deal includes new stop-motion series and classic series to air on Disney XD and stream on Disney+ in 2027 and beyond.
