Disney Shuts Down Eight-Year-Old Play Parks App, Ending Interactive Experiences

The Play Disney Parks app, which was launched in 2018 to enhance the theme park experience at Walt Disney World, has been permanently shut down. The app allowed guests to interact with attractions and areas around the resort using their smartphones.

Disney had announced that the service would be coming to an end, so the shutdown is not entirely unexpected. However, for long-time users who spent years collecting achievements, playing games while waiting in line, and interacting with parts of the theme parks through their phones, this news may come as a disappointment.

The app's shutdown means that guests can no longer log into their accounts through the app, and digital achievements, progress, trivia, and other features connected to Play Disney Parks have effectively disappeared. Batuu Bounty Hunters, which was part of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, will continue to be available independently but without its former app integration.

The shutdown reflects a shift in Disney's digital strategy since the launch of Play Disney Parks eight years ago. The company has increasingly focused on the My Disney Experience ecosystem and other planning tools, such as Genie+ and Lightning Lane, which have become essential parts of an average Walt Disney World vacation.
