Disney Speeds Up Monstropolis Opening Date to 2027
Walt Disney World's Monstropolis is making rapid progress and has been given an accelerated opening date of 2027. The Monsters, Inc. miniland will open ahead of schedule at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The expansion also includes a new attraction called the Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster, which is currently being built backstage.
Monstropolis is partially replacing Muppets Courtyard and existing venues are being reimagined in the front half of the land. Changes include modified facades on the former MuppetVision 3D theater and PizzeRizzo restaurant, as well as a demolished Stage 1 Company Store.
During the 'Horizons: A Carousel of Progress' presentation at the 2026 D23 Expo, Neil Patrick Harris brought out special guests to discuss the new sights coming soon to Monstropolis. Disney Legend Randy Newman composed the song 'Welcome to Monstropolis,' which will be played next year when the area opens.
Chris Beatty, Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering, revealed that humans are invited to attend a show at the Glob Theater called 'Welcome to Monstropolis.' The monsters in the show will introduce humans to Monstropolis and highlight similarities between humans and monsters. Mike and Sulley will host the show.
Imagineers have boasted that the production will be packed with technology, backed up by Walt Disney World's spending $22.4 million on MuppetVision Theater Transformation. The visitor saw mock-ups of the technology and Audio Animatronics featured in 'Welcome to Monstropolis' during a site visit to WDI facilities.
Archie's Scare Pig Pizza will be located across from the Glob Theater, offering pizza to both humans and monsters. The restaurant is being reimagined with cosmetic changes and new thematic window-dressing. A Monsters University Alumni Club has also opened its doors to human visitors eating at Archie's.
Harryhausen's Restaurant will take over the space previously occupied by Mama Melrose and will be a table service restaurant. It features a menu unlike anything else offered at Walt Disney World and is expected to be a highly anticipated dining location.
