Disney Taps AI Expert Karandeep Anand as First-Ever Chief Technology Officer
Karandeep Anand has been appointed as Disney's first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO), effective October 2, 2026. This marks a significant shift in how the company competes in the age of artificial intelligence.
Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering across the company's segment technology teams to further modernize how Disney builds and delivers technology company-wide.
With 15 years at Microsoft under his belt, Anand has extensive experience in cloud computing, social media, fintech, and generative AI. His most recent stint was as CEO of Character.AI, a generative AI chatbot platform that allowed users to interact with AI-powered characters.
The irony of the hire is not subtle, given Disney's cease-and-desist letter sent to Character.AI last year over unauthorized use of its characters in the platform. However, Anand's expertise in AI-generated characters and safety guardrails will be crucial for Disney as it considers what AI means for its intellectual property portfolio, streaming platform, and theme park visitor experiences.
