Disney Taps Character.AI Vet for First-Ever CTO Role Amid AI Push
The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) has appointed Karandeep Anand as its first-ever chief technology officer, effective October 2. The move marks a strategic response to the growing importance of AI and streaming technology in the company's operations.
Anand brings extensive experience in cloud infrastructure and generative AI from his previous roles at Microsoft and Character.AI. He will oversee enterprise technology, AI platforms, and engineering across Disney's business segments, including streaming, studios, theme parks, and corporate operations.
The appointment could help modernize technology development and coordinate investment across Disney's businesses, potentially improving efficiency, personalization, and product development. However, the company must address concerns surrounding safety practices and intellectual-property protection in light of Character.AI's past disputes with Disney and regulatory issues.
Anand will report directly to CEO Josh D'Amaro and has the potential to bring experienced engineers from Character.AI to join him at Disney. The move is seen as a promising organizational step, but it does not yet provide evidence of financial returns.
