Disney Taps Netflix for Expanded Reach
Disney has reached a licensing agreement with Netflix to stream some of its movies and TV shows on the popular streaming platform. The deal covers both classic library titles and current season shows, which will be available for a set period rather than forever.
The agreement is a significant shift in the way Disney approaches content distribution. Historically, the company has been tight-fisted about licensing its titles to other platforms. However, with over 325 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix's massive audience offers an attractive opportunity for exposure and revenue.
Some of the notable titles included in the deal are Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which will premiere on Netflix on October 4 before Season 3 debuts on Disney+ on November 20. Additionally, all five Ice Age movies from 20th Century Studios will be available on Netflix globally for a three-month run.
The agreement is seen as a business decision that aligns with Disney's goals of expanding its reach and generating additional revenue. The company emphasizes that it remains committed to maintaining exclusivity for Disney-branded titles, which remain mostly exclusive to its own platforms and TV channels.
