Disney has undergone a major leadership shake-up, with top executives sending memos to employees about the changes. Adam Smith, currently product and tech chief, will take on the role of Chairman, Direct-to-Consumer for Disney Entertainment, overseeing streaming platforms globally.

Smith joined Disney two years ago after 13 years at YouTube, where he was VP of product management. He's credited with driving significant growth and improvement to Disney's global streaming platforms, including its user interface.

Walt Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro announced the changes on Thursday, saying that Smith will continue to work closely with film chief Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, Disney's chief creative officer. Joe Earley, who shared the role of head of streaming with Smith, will move into a new position as President, Disney Entertainment Television Franchise and Content Strategy.
