Disney Theme Parks Boom Driven by AI Investments and New Attractions
Disney's theme parks segment saw significant growth in the three months ending June 27, with revenue and operating income both rising by double digits. According to Disney's third-quarter earnings report, revenue for its theme parks and experiences business increased by 10 percent from $9.086 billion to $9.968bn. Operating income grew even faster, rising by 20 percent from $2.516 billion to $3.017 billion.
Attendance at Disney's global attractions was up by 4 percent year-over-year, with Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line experiencing particular strength. The company is investing in new attractions and expansions to sustain this growth, including major projects like Villains Land in Orlando and the Avengers Campus expansion in Anaheim.
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro highlighted the importance of emerging technologies like AI in driving returns for the company. He noted that Disney is using AI to design, build, and operate its parks and experiences, including AI-powered digital twins and simulation tools to test new attractions. The company has also made its J.A.R.V.I.S. AI tool available to over 2,000 Imagineers.
The use of AI is intended to enhance the creative process, not simply streamline operations, according to D'Amaro. 'Our company was founded on the convergence of creativity and breakthrough technology, and continuing that tradition is a priority for me and this leadership team,' he said.
