Disney unveils Messi-produced animated soccer series for 2027
Disney is expanding its animated sports lineup with a new soccer-inspired series, "Messi and the Giants", set to premiere on Disney+ and Disney Channel in summer 2027. The series, executive produced by soccer legend Lionel Messi, follows 12-year-old Leo, who gets trapped in an alternate reality filled with giants. To return home, Leo must compete in high-stakes, soccer-like battles using powerful objects called "orbs," but he lacks the special abilities everyone else has, forcing him to rely on his skill, teamwork, and determination.
The series debuted its first teaser trailer at San Diego Comic-Con Málaga in Spain, offering fans a sneak peek at the fantastical world, characters, and music. Argentinian artist Luck Ra performs the original theme song, "Vamos, Vamos, Vamos," adding another layer of authenticity to the series. Behind the scenes, the project is backed by a team of producers and animators from Sony Pictures Television and Atlantis Studios.
"Messi and the Giants" aims to blend soccer with fantasy, offering young fans a unique underdog story. While "Dragon Striker" has already shown the potential of animated soccer action, this new series takes a different approach, focusing on an alternate reality and the challenges Leo faces without special powers. The series is set to premiere globally on Disney+ in summer 2027, adding to Disney's growing collection of sports-inspired animated content.
