A record-breaking heat dome is about to hit Central Florida, bringing life-threatening conditions to Walt Disney World. According to WFLA and the National Weather Service (NWS), a near-record heat dome is building across the Southeast, with major heat expected to begin this weekend and continue through much of next week.

The NWS has already issued a Heat Advisory for all of east-central Florida until 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 13th. Forecasters predict hot, humid conditions will continue through the next week, with heat-index values near Heat Advisory criteria each day through the weekend and additional advisories likely.

The developing system is known as a heat dome, a term used for a persistent area of high pressure that can trap hot air over a region. The heat index accounts for humidity, making it harder for sweat to evaporate and the body to cool itself.
