Disney World Marks 55 Years with Record-Breaking Growth and Future Projects
Walt Disney World is celebrating its 55th anniversary on October 1st. The resort's story began in 1966 when Walt Disney announced his plans for a Florida theme park, but he passed away just one year later. His brother Roy O. Disney took over and ensured the project's completion.
The original Walt Disney World was modest by today's standards, with only one theme park, two hotels, and a campground built on 27,400 acres of Central Florida swampland. However, in the past five years, the resort has added over 70 new or refreshed experiences across its parks and resorts.
These additions include TRON Lightcycle / Run and Tiana's Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and Bluey's Wild World at Animal Kingdom. The resort is in a near-constant state of growth, with Joe Schott, president of Walt Disney World Resort, saying 'As we celebrate 55 years, we're proud of the incredible cast members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow.'
The next chapter for Walt Disney World may be its most ambitious yet. Construction is currently underway on a new Cars-themed land and Villains Land in Magic Kingdom, while Monstropolis will bring a theater show, dining, and shopping to Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2027.
